The air grew thick with the scent of copper and rotting meat as the sky above the camp turned a bruised purple. Guts stumbled forward, his sword heavy in his hand, but the ground beneath him suddenly liquefied into a mirror of his own nightmares. From the swirling mist rose a shapeless horror, Ubik, its form shifting between the faces of dead friends and screaming strangers. A voice that sounded like Griffith's whispered from everywhere at once, promising salvation if he would only surrender Casca. The world twisted, walls folding in on themselves, as the Apostle laughed with a thousand mouths, waiting for the human spirit to finally snap.

Ubik's power stems from its direct connection to the God Hand, allowing it to manipulate the fabric of reality within a localized area known as an 'Eclipse' or similar astral convergence. It does not rely on physical strength but rather on psychological warfare, projecting illusions that are indistinguishable from reality to its victims. The primary cost for Ubik is its existence; it has no true self and exists solely to serve the God Hand's will. Its limitations appear tied to the strength of the target's willpower; those with a strong enough spirit, like Guts, can resist the illusions long enough to fight back physically or mentally. Specific instances include the Eclipse ritual where Ubik trapped Guts in a hallucination of his own past and attempted to lure Casca into Femto's embrace. Later, it reappeared during the Fantasia arc, continuing its role as a tormentor for those who defy the God Hand's design.
