The world is defined by the Brand of Sacrifice, which marks its bearers as offerings for demonic entities known as Apostles. These beings were once human but transformed through the Godhand's rituals. The narrative establishes that Guts' bond with Griffith brought calamity, a warning delivered by the demonic warrior Nosferatu Zodd. While Guts seeks revenge, he is constantly pursued by the Demon Child—his and Casca's unborn son corrupted by Femto's violation—which haunts him as a spiritual presence. The Skull Knight serves as a cryptic guide, warning of the Eclipse and the convergence of realms. This era highlights the hierarchy where strength dictates survival against supernatural forces, with Guts utilizing the Berserker Armor later to enhance his strength at the cost of his sanity.

In Their Own Story

Years after the Eclipse, known as the Black Swordsman, Guts travels alone accompanied by the elf Puck. After being captured by Farnese of the Holy Iron Chain Knights, he escapes only to find Casca missing from Godo's care. His search leads him to St. Albion amidst refugees fleeing the Kushan Empire, where he rescues her from the fanatic Mozgus as the dead rise. Here, Farnese, her bodyguard Serpico, and thief Isidro join his cause. The group battles an Apostle beneath the city that consumes the Demon Child, using its essence to restore Griffith to physical form. After clashing with Griffith and Zodd at Godo's home, Guts resolves to travel to Elfhelm to heal Casca, fearing his own rage may endanger her. Meanwhile, Griffith reforms the Band of the Hawk with Apostles, waging war against the rogue Apostle Ganishka.

Reader's Guide

Survivors should note that Guts begins this arc armed only with the Dragonslayer and a prosthetic arm, having lost an eye and limb during the Eclipse. His primary goal is vengeance against Griffith, but he must first secure safety for Casca, who suffers from mental trauma. Early in his journey, he meets Puck, an elf who accompanies him. He encounters Farnese of the Holy Iron Chain Knights, initially a captor turned ally alongside her bodyguard Serpico and thief Isidro. The narrative warns of the Brand of Sacrifice, which attracts Apostles and demonic beings at night. Guts eventually receives the Berserker Armor from witch Flora, which enhances his strength but threatens his sanity.
